The project

MICS is an Extended Partnership that brings together universities, research centers, and companies, funded by the Ministry of University and Research through resources allocated by the European Union under the NextGenerationEU program. This initiative facilitates collaboration between the business and research sectors, as well as between public and private entities, creating a unique alliance. Currently, it focuses on three essential sectors of the Italian industrial landscape: Apparel, Furniture and Wood, and Automation and Mechanics, with plans to expand into additional sectors in the future. MICS organizes its research into eight thematic areas (referred to as Spokes) to tackle the challenges facing design, production, consumption, and the end-of-life processes of materials, products, and production technologies, all while promoting a shift towards greener and more circular models.

Our contribution within Spoke 8 focuses on the design and management of factories oriented towards digitalization through Artificial Intelligence and data analysis approaches. The goal is to create a new concept of a sustainable and resilient digital factory where artificial intelligence, digital technologies, and collaborative robotics establish a reliable co-evolution relationship between humans and machines. This will lead to high-performance, inclusive, and sustainable human-machine work systems.

Objectives

  • Develop sustainable, data-driven approaches and data-centric AI advancements in intelligent processes.
  • Innovate and test multi-perspective digital technologies and collaborative robotic solutions.
  • Leverage future digital technologies to define innovative design principles and management guidelines for sustainable and resilient production and logistics processes in the factory of the future.
