Augmented Surgery

In the high-stakes environment of a modern surgical suite, the Augmented Surgery for Healthcare 5.0 demonstration reveals a seamless blend of human expertise and digital precision.

The presented demo is centered around a high-fidelity patient mock-up serving as the canvas for a sophisticated optical tracking positioning system. This system maintains constant awareness of the surgical environment, bridging the gap between physical anatomy and digital data. As the surgeon handles the guide prototypes, they do not need to look away at a traditional monitor; instead, an Augmented Reality headset overlays a digital roadmap directly onto their field of vision. Through this immersive feedback, holographic markers indicate the perfect trajectory and depth, providing instant visual cues to ensure the minimally invasive instruments are positioned with absolute accuracy.

By utilizing these tools in tandem, the system eliminates the traditional challenges of navigating complex angles, representing the core of Healthcare 5.0 where technology elevates a surgeon’s physical capabilities through real-time, intuitive data visualization.

Sport

During the same event we also took part in the roundtable Sport & AI: the case of canoeing.

Together with Olympic champion Giovanni De Gennaro, and moderated by Federico Vergari, we discussed how artificial intelligence is transforming sport through real-time sensing, intelligent vision systems, and predictive models that enhance training, performance, and injury prevention.

A special thanks to Matteo Chiantore, Mayor of Ivrea, and Antonio Rossi, President of the Italian Canoe Kayak Federation and multi-Olympic medalist, for their institutional greetings. Their presence added both an institutional perspective and the voice of elite sport, reinforcing the importance of innovation as a strategic lever for the future of athletic development.

What clearly emerged is a dynamic intersection between data, human talent, and decision-making: AI expands our ability to interpret complex performance signals, supports coaches and athletes with deeper, actionable insights, and opens up new scenarios where intuition and analytics coexist. The real challenge is not technological adoption per se, but how to integrate these tools in a way that preserves the centrality of human expertise while pushing the boundaries of performance.

Grateful as well to Matteo Magotti and Enrico Capirone for enabling the collaboration between Ivrean Canoa Club and 3D LAB. This partnership brings together advanced technological expertise with a deep understanding of the sport within an innovation-driven approach.
